Year 5 - SPOTLIGHT February 2025
⭐⭐⭐ Who's in the Spotlight? ⭐⭐⭐
⭐It's the turn of our wonderful Year 5s!
We were extremely busy last term so here's an update! We've already hit the ground running this term, too...
🎲 In maths, we have been focusing on securing accurate and efficient written methods for all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and developing our understanding of fractions. We've ordered, compared, added, subtracted, simplified and converted improper fractions to mixed numbers! We are developing great problem solving skills and deepening our mathematical thinking through our 'twist it' and 'deepen it' challenges too. 🎲
📖 In our reading lessons, we have been studying a version of Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. In all writing, we are working hard to ensure we use clear sentences and appropriate punctuation. After focusing on story writing last term, this term we wrote letters. We had to choose a job that we thought we'd be suited to (for example, rollercoaster tester, dog sitter, origami tutor) and then wrote fantastic formal letters of application. Lots of us had 'you're hired!' as our feedback! ✏️
🎨 Our art lessons have all been about developing our painting skills. We have experimented with adding different substances to water colour paint to create different textures and effects. We tried: different salts (Epsom, table, rock salt), washing up liquid, bleach, bubble wrap, wax, tin foil and more! Next, we looked at the drawing '5 Paintbrushes' by Jim Dine, an American artist, and composed our own 5 paintbrushes picture using the effects we liked the most. The final pieces are amazing and all so unique. 🎨
🏊🏼♀️🏊🏼♂️ In PE, we have been working on our fitness by developing the different elements: speed, agility, strength, flexibility, stamina, co-ordination and balance. All of these things help us in all sports!
Friday afternoons have seen us 'diving in' to improve our confidence in the water and strokes during our swimming lessons. 🏊🏼♂️🏊🏼♀️
🌏In geography, we have been using atlases, globes and digital mapping. We have been busy locating the world’s countries, particularly focusing on Europe and North and South America. We have learned about the different biomes and key physical and human characteristics, countries, and major cities. These lessons have sparked lots of conversations about where we might like to travel to in the future. 🌏
🪙🧠 This term in PSHE, we have been thinking about our futures. What might we like to do when we grow up and what steps might I need to take to get there? We've thought about what's important to us- the satisfaction, working hours, salary? We also continue to think about how best to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with our peers. 🧠🪙
🐻👸🏽 We've been lucky to also have the opportunity to go on a wonderful visit to 'We The Curious' in Bristol and to Bournside to see their wonderful production of Beauty and the Beast. Thank you so much to Cheltenham Bournside School for inviting us! 👸🏽🐻
⭐ What a great end to the first half of Year 5 and we have so much more in store... ⭐
